If you get to the interview stage, then make sure you've done your homework. If you don’t know the business then think about visiting it first - to find out where it is, how long it takes to get there, and other useful information, such as what the dress code is. If they have a website then take a look and familiarise yourself with the company, what it does and who works for them. Looking like you already work there is a good first step.

You then need to think about the kind of questions you are likely to be asked - about your experience or why you want to work there. Having a couple of questions of your own is also a good idea - it shows you are thoughtful and interested in the company.

Here is some more advice from LearnDirect:

  What to do:

- Dress smartly, look bright and attentive, and speak clearly and confidently.
- Examine the person specification and your CV/application form and think about what type of questions they will ask you.
- Sell yourself. No-one else is going to! Be positive about yourself and your experiences.
- Get feedback on your performance, whether you were successful or not.

  What not to do:

- Don't be late.
- Don't slouch in your seat or do anything else that makes you look disinterested.
- Don't lie! The interviewer may see through you and even if you get the job, your employer can dismiss you if they find out.
- Don't be arrogant and assume you've got the job.
- Don't criticise former employers or colleagues. Interviewers may mark you down as a troublemaker and a gossip.
- Don't argue with the interviewer, no matter what. Remember to keep things positive!
